Smudger September Challenge #6 - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

This is my DT piece for the September Challenge on Smudger. The theme is to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The challenge is to create a piece that has at least one element that has been saved from the trash can.  There are so many items that we throw away everyday that can be used in art. Just a few examples are cereal boxes, newspapers, junk mail, magazines, envelops, food containers, jars, brown and plastic bags.

I created my Selkie Treasure Jar with the Selkie digital image from Smudgetastic. After coloring the image and printing it out, I sandwiched a cereal box between the image and a page torn out of a damaged book. I cut out the image once everything was dry. I embellished the image with a little chalk and some glitter. I added the words "Selkie legend" and "treasures" to the design. I glued a popcan pull tab to the back for a hanger. That way I didn't have to punch a hole into my design.

Inside the jar is some sand, shells, and a blue marble. A rolled up page from a damaged book that is tied with some really cool fiber yarn represents a scroll tied with a lock of the Selkie's hair. The jar is topped with a circular piece of the book page and random pearls. The tag is tied onto the jar with a piece of grey tee shirt.

A Selkie is a folklore creature. Selkies are said to live as seals in the sea but shed their skin to become human on land. Stories concerning selkies are generally romantic tragedies.

I hope you have been inspired to pull out your art supplies, find something to recycle and create something stunning for the September Smudger Challenge!

I am entering my Selkie Treasure Jar in the following challenges:
