Paper Bead Bobby Pins - eco friendly hair accessory

DIY bobby pins

These bold and colorful paper bead bobby pins were created from magazine and catalog page images. Making these hair pins an eco-friendly hair accessory. One design is a gray background with a darker gray abstract floral, another is a gray, white and yellow background with darker grey lines. To compliment the other designs, the third design adds some turquoise, yellow and orange to the color mix. The bobby pins are unique and one of a kind.

Bobby Pins - Handcrafted Paper Bead - Anthropologie Catalog

Handcrafted Paper Bead Bobby Pins

I made these paper bead bobby pins from an upcycled Anthropologie catalog page. The hair pins are eco-friendly. You could use junk mail, old magazines, catalogs, etc. to find colorful images for bead making.

The paper bead is 2" long. It is varnished to help resist moisture. You apply the bobby pin to your hair the same way you would an unadorned hair pin. You can wear one, two at a time or all of them at once. It's up to you. It's a creative way to add some color and bling to your hairstyle.  Have fun!!!

The pictured paper bead bobby pins can be purchased in my Etsy Store.

Bobby Pin - embellished with paper bead

Paper Bead embellished Bobby Pins

I've been having so much fun creating these paper bead bobby pins. It's fun to go through discarded magazines and catalogs to find images that are colorful or have an interesting design.

The blue and orange bead is created from a sweater advertisement. If you look closely you can see the knitted stitches. The other blue design is cut from a skirt. The swirly gray, white and black design is from a background.

You can wear one, two or all three hair pins at the same time. They add an element of surprise to your hairstyle. You can have fun with them. The above pictured bobby pins are available in my Etsy Store.

Bobby Pins made from paper beads

I handcrafted these paper bead bobby pins from colorful images I found in fashion magazines. There is a flirty orange geometric pattern, a purple marble-look pattern and a multi-colored brush stroke design. These colorful hair pins will add some fun and flair to your hair.

You can make your own or purchase this set of bobby pins at my Etsy Store.

Animal Print Paper Bead Bobby Pins

Handcrafted Paper Bead Bobby Pins

Animal prints are still trendy for 2012. You can find them in clothing, shoes, purses and my favorite, hair accessories. I made these paper beads from images I found in fashion magazines. All the prints came from purse photos. The purses were very nice but cost uber dollars. You can inexpensively add a little bit of "wild" to your ensemble with these bobbies.

You clip the bobby pins in your hair the same way you would an unadorned bobby pin. You can wear one, two or all three at once. Anyway you wear them, they are fun and unique.

This set of three bobby pins is available in my Etsy Store.

Handcrafted Paper Bead Bobby Pins - Ed Hardy Designs

Ed Hardy Paper Bead Bobby Pins

I love the old school tattoo designs by Ed Hardy. If I was to get a tattoo myself I would choose something similar. They have a vintage appeal that is timeless.

I found these designs in advertisements for Ed Hardy Perfume and Cologne. I hope the fragrance is as nice as the packaging, lol! The bobby pins are definitely recognizable. If you like to make a statement, these are the hair accessories for you. You will find them in my Etsy Shop.

The paper bead is 2" long. It is varnished to help resist moisture. You clip the bobby pin to your hair the same way you would an unadorned hair pin. You can wear one, two at a time or all of them at once. It's up to you. Have fun!!!

Wooden Spool Necklaces

Coach Poppy Perfume Spool Necklace
Wood Spool Art Nouveau Abstract Altered Spool Necklace
Wooden Spool Necklace - Bohemian Vibe

These three spool necklaces had expired in my Etsy Shop. I decided to revamp them before re-listing them. I added the smaller spools to the arrangement and wrapped them with the fibers that had previously been tied directly to the chain.

I like how the necklaces turned out. Hopefully, someone who likes quirky jewelry will see them and just have to buy one.

Cat Model?

My cat Hunter decided to get in on the photography session. Actually, he just likes the burlap base I use for photos. If I wanted him to pose like that, he would not do so gracefully.

How to make a 3D Paper Brooch - Paper Jewelry Craft Tutorial

Paper Brooch - 3D Pop Up Circle

This brooch is an eco-friendly paper jewelry craft. The pictured brooch is made from a JoAnn's flyer, magazine images, hardcover book page and a cereal box.

Brooches are little pieces of wearable art. They can be used to adorn clothing, purses, hats or any surface you can attach a pin to.

Materials

MATERIALS:
Paper scraps
Page from a hard cover book or Card stock (for reinforcing magazine
                                                                             images).
Cereal box or similar weight cardboard
Circle punch - I used 1 5/8"
Mod Podge
Varnish
Acrylic Paint
Strong Glue for pinback - I used Glossy Accents by Ranger
Paint brush
Scissors
Sewing machine
Optional - bone folder

Step One:
Prepare a work surface and gather your supplies. I use old magazine pages for palettes and messy gluing and painting.

Step Two:
Create a cardboard template you can lay over images to find designs that fit inside your paper punch.

Step Three:
Choose four images and glue them to your supporting paper using Mod Podge. It works best to apply glue to an area on your heavier paper and also on the back of your magazine print. Smooth out the air bubbles with your fingers. I do one image at a time. Magazine pages are glossy and not easy to adhere. Let Dry.

Step Four:
Varnish your designs and let dry. Punch a circle shape out of the cereal box and paint it with an acrylic paint color of your choice. Let Dry.

Step Five:
Punch out the circle shapes.

Step Six:
Varnish backside (heavier paper) of the circles and let them dry. Don't be concerned if the paper curls, you can flex it flat again once it has dried.

Step Seven:
Stack your circles in an eye pleasing manner. Glue the bottom circle to the cereal box base with Mod Podge or Elmer's white glue. Let Dry.

Step Eight:
Hold the other three circles on top of the base and sew down the center. You can mark your center by folding the top circle in half and creasing it with a bone folder.

Step Nine:
Fold your circle edges toward the center of the brooch to give it the 3D fanned appearance.

Step Ten:
Use a strong glue to attach your pinback. I used a 1 1/4" pinback and Glossy Accents glue. Let Dry.

You are finished! You will want to make a dozen of these brooches once you discover how quick and easy they are to make.

Handcrafted Paper Brooches are available in my Etsy Shop

Rhinestone Gem Bobby Pins

Gemstone Bobby Pins

These sparkly bobby pins were made from adhesive rhinestones found in the scrapbook department of Michael's craft store. The rhinestone is about 11/16th of an inch and faceted. They really catch the light. I removed the adhesive backing from the rhinestone and used hot glue to attach it to a 2" silver hair pin with a bezel. I found these at Hobby Lobby.

I am a scrapbook embellishment hoarder. I pick up every little trinket that catches me eye. Until, I run out of room for everything in my craft space and then I come up with ideas to use them.

If you like to be unique and have one of a kind accessories, you have to make them yourself. Or, these little gems are waiting at my Etsy Store.

Fabric Covered Button Bobby Pins

Vintage & Damask Inspired Bobby Pins

Scrap book embellishments can make some very pretty bobby pins. Lately, I have been trying to clean out some of my scrap book supplies. I found a good use for fabric covered button brads. I decided to make hair pins out of them. I cut the brad off the back with wire cutters as close to the base as I could. I then hot glued the button to the bezel provided on the bobby pin. You can get really sturdy bobby pins with a flat area for gluing or a bezel type at Hobby Lobby craft store.

Take a second look at your scrap book supplies. If you like to add flair to your hair, scrap book supply bobby pins are easy and affordable to make. I have listed the above hair fasteners in my Etsy Store.

Magazine & Cereal Box Brooch

Paper Brooch

I created this brooch from magazine pages. I used a 1 5/8" punch to cut out the circles. I glued the circles together so that they created a fan effect. I used a piece of cereal box for the base of the brooch. I think recycling is important. This was an easy way to create something pretty out of a discarded magazine. You could use advertisements and junk mail also. So many possibilities!

I used only green images for this brooch so that I could enter the "glorious green" challenge going on at Gingersnap Creations. I embellished the center of my brooch with mini green seed beads. They are one of my favorite embellishments. I am entering this brooch in the "favorite embellishment" challenge at Little Darlings.

Check out the artwork on the above listed sites. You will be happy you did!

Glorious Green Collage

Vintage Lady Collage Wall Hanging

I was inspired by the artwork and challenge on Simon Says Stamp and Show. Their challenge was to create a piece with torn edges, distress ink, buttons and wings. What an interesting combo.

My background paper is torn from a damaged book. I folded over the top of the page and stitched it down, leaving room to insert a large popsicle stick. I drilled some holes in the stick and attached some wire and beads for my hanger. It reminds me of a scroll.

My designs were from clipart books and catalogs. I used some distress ink, tore some pieces, bent some edges and left some pieces unglued to create texture and dimension to the piece.  I embellished the collage with some of my favorite embellishments. I used six chartreuse buttons, a green gem and a piece of lace-like yarn to bring this paper collage to life!

I'm so pleased with this wall hanging that I will be offering it in my Etsy store.

I am entering this wall hanging in the following challenges:

Simon Says Stamp and Show - torn edges, distress ink, buttons & wings
Gingersnap Creations - glorious greens
Little Darlings - favorite embellishments
Paper Pretties - #192 texture
